June 8th 2010 -- Organic Clothes for Children - Fashionable Eco-Friendly Clothes
It seems to be that fashionable organic clothes for children just do not appear to exist. Many of today's organic clothes are the equivalent of a burlap sack and many parents would be hard pressed to want to subject their child to that no matter what the advantages are of having organic clothing. Fortunately, there have been great strides in sustainable technology that makes it possible for children to wear just about anything that can be made by conventional fabrics. Still, it is an uphill battle to persuade parents to make the switch, no matter how gradual, to organic clothing for children.
The word "organic" carries a lot of respect, even if parents do not know what it takes for an article of clothing to be considered "organic." For example, conventionally grown cotton is mistakenly assumed to be organic since it is grown from the soil and cultivated in farms. However, this is hardly the case. Conventionally grown cotton uses a disproportionate amount of pesticides and insecticides in its cultivation. This huge amount of toxins cause irreparable damage to the environment, let alone the health risks to the farmers who work the fields, the wildlife that live around these farms, and ultimately to your children, as they are the ones who wear the clothes. To give you an idea of how staggeringly disproportionate the toxic consumption is, cotton crops take up about 2.5 percent of all cultivated land in the world yet it uses approximately 25 percent of the world's pesticides and about 10 percent of the world's insecticides. The dependency on these toxic chemicals is the reason why it is so important to support organic farms and organic products.
Organic clothes for your children is a great start for this support since your children will benefit greatly and immediately. The environmental benefits aside, your children will not be exposed to the harsh chemicals conventionally grown cotton uses which are left behind on the clothes. According to Rachel V. Birchler of Mooi, an organic children's clothing boutique in Pittsburgh, "during the conversion of conventional cotton into clothing, numerous toxic chemicals are added at each stage - harsh petroleum scours, softeners, brighteners, heavy metals, flame and soil retardants, ammonia and formaldehyde - to name just a few." With the vast amount of chemicals that are used for clothes, you can be sure that your children will be much safer with organic clothes, especially if your children have skin allergies or skin that is highly sensitive.
Organic clothes for your children can be fashionable and you don't have to sacrifice style for safety. More and more companies are contributing to the growth of organic clothes and it is beneficial for everyone as well as the environment.
May 19th 2010 -- Organic Children's Clothes - Fashionable Eco-Friendly Clothes
It is a common notion that many consumers have that organic children's clothes are not fashionable and it is tantamount to dressing your child in a burlap sack. Although the term "organic" has been associated with unflattering labels such as "tree hugger" or "hippie," fashion trends have made dramatic advances in the past decade and even major retailers such as Nike, Wal-Mart, and Target have been supporting organic clothes.
The awareness of the word "organic" has been huge in recent years. More and more people are gravitating towards all things organic but many do not fully understand why organic clothes, especially for children, are better. You may know that it is better for the environment but not fully realize why it is better. Your neighbor may believe products made from organic materials may be safe but, again, without knowing why. To give an example, let's take clothes made from cotton. Clothes made from organic cotton do not use pesticides, insecticides, or other toxic chemicals in its production. The lack of these chemicals can be a huge benefit if your child has skin allergies or sensitive skin. The EPA has even released a report listing the seven of the top fifteen of the most widely used pesticides in cultivating cotton as a known or likely human carcinogen. It is not surprising that this is the case since many of these pesticides and insecticides were developed during World War II as a chemical weapons. Also, the farm workers that work the fields are not exposed to these toxic chemicals. They work in a safer environment as they do not have to be exposed to these toxins.
The human benefits aside, supporting organic farming is a major boost to the environment as well. Research indicates that only ten percent of the pesticides and insecticides used on cotton are effective. The rest seep into the soil and contaminate the water thereby ravaging the environment and killing off the wildlife. In addition, supporting organic farming also supports new technologies and farming methods to grow organic crops. These farmers are on the forefront of "green" technology and methods to ease the stress that conventional cotton crops create on the environment.
Buying clothes made from conventionally grown cotton doesn't make you a bad parent or callous person but it is important to realize that there are other options available and those other options can be the best choice for everyone. Just understanding why organic clothes are better for your children will make a world of difference.
May 15th 2010 -- Benefits of Organic Clothes for Children
There are benefits of having your children wear organic clothes, especially if your child has sensitive skin or has skin allergies. There are a lot of chemicals and toxins that go into the production of clothes. For example, cotton is one of the most common fibers used in the making of clothes, both adults and children, but it is one of the largest consumers of the world's pesticides. Cotton crops make up about 2.5 percent of the world's cultivated land but it uses approximately 25 percent of the world's pesticides and 10 percent of the world's insecticides in its cultivation. Not only that, once the cotton is harvested, it is further abused by the harsh scours, dyes, sprays, and other toxins that manufacturers use even before the fabric is sent to get cut into patterns for clothes.
Organic clothes for children are completely different. No chemicals are used, no pesticides or insecticides, and everything from the farms it comes from to the production facility where the final product is made, and they all must go through strict federal guidelines in order for it to be considered "organic." The absence of these toxins that the even the EPA have stated are known or likely human carcinogens is a huge benefit to both adults and children with skin allergies or sensitive skin. Health issues aside, though this is a major benefit of organic clothes, the environmental effects are can be seen and felt as well.
The farming methods organic farmers utilize leave a small carbon footprint than their conventional farming counterparts. The entire process consumes less energy, does not use as much fuel, and these farms emit fewer greenhouse gases, which are all good for our environment. The natural pesticides and insecticides to eliminate pests such as weeds make the use of harmful and toxic chemicals obsolete. This translates into no farm worker having to endure dangerous work environments as well as you and your children benefiting from a safer choice of clothes.
The environmentally friendly techniques these farmers employ are then further refined and even new techniques are discovered and implemented which need to be supported if we are going to help eliminate the need to have toxins on our clothes. These farmers are on the cutting edge of eco-friendly technology and farming methods out of necessity. This ingenuity and advancement is a huge advantage when it comes to finding new sustainable methods to meet our needs as consumers.
Buying clothes made from conventional cotton does not make anyone a bad person but there are better options available to parents wanting the best for their children's health and even their future.

September 23rd 2009 -- The 61st Annual Emmy Awards, con't.
So check this out: TOM ARNOLD, DEBI MAZAR, KENNY JOHNSON, CASSIDY LEHRMAN were a few of the celebrities who visited the Creative Coalition Portrait Studio at the ALIVE Expo Green Pavilion at the Hotel Sofitel, to have their portraits taken by Pulitzer Prize winning photographer Brian Smith, for "Art & Soul," a coffee table book benefiting Project Green and the Creative Coalition. Each celeb received a "green" giftbag filled with eco- friendly stuff including a special gift card from us which we created for this event.
This year's Emmy Awards was a great way for us to try to spread our common message of sustainability and it's so relieving to see that celebs are taking note of it. You're probably thinking that celebrities are not the end-all-be-all of eco-consciousness but they are ever-present in our culture, whether we like it or not, just for the fact that they are seen and heard everywhere we go. So if they believe and support what we do, it's that much easier to get our message across to a greater audience. Anyway, I'm off my soapbox. We're just really excited to have been a part of this event.
